Fall Foliage Classic Day 3 - Portsmouth NH to Amesbury MA
Distance: 48 miles
Weather: Beautiful sunny fall day. Upper 40s to start. Mid 50s to end. Winds out of the west.
Highlights of the day:
We had decidedly noticeable winds out of the west all day long. One would think that we’d be complaining about that because they weren’t exactly favorable. But one would be wrong. It was so clear and the skies so blue that I guess we were all distracted. It was another beautiful day to be on the bicycle. And, no, I will not get tired of typing that sentence in this or any other ride journal.
Our route took us along the full length of New Hampshire’s Atlantic coastline, all 23-ish miles of it. It was 23-ish miles packed with lots of photos ops. Rocky shores. Beaches. Mansions. Marshes. And even an island of cairns that was discovered by one of our riders last year. We didn’t do any stacking of our own but we had to take pictures. We waved as we went by Wallis Sands Beach (famous in AbB circles as the end point for two of our cross country tours). We fueled up at our SAG stop in Hampton Beach State Park and then headed down into Massachusetts, crossing over the Merrimack River into Newburyport.
The end of today’s route went down one side of the Merrimack River, over a bridge and back up the other side into town. The color along the river isn’t quite popping yet but we enjoyed taking it all in on gently rolling, nicely paved roads with the river as an added feature in the backdrop. Miles completed, pictures taken, we headed to our hotel in Amesbury. Let’s do it again tomorrow!
