Day 38 - Mt Pleasant to Birch Run MI

Crew’s Log…

Mileage: 74 miles

Climbing: 625’

Weather: Upper 50s to start. Low 70s to end. Very few clouds. Winds out of the north.

Highlights of the day:

We rolled at 8:30 and headed straight into more farms. We had our usual corn, soybeans and cows. There were a couple of crops that confused us mostly because they weren’t corn or soybeans. One looked like a lettuce or other leafy vegetable but it could have been beets. That’s just how good an agriculturalist I am. 🤔

Did I mention that this part of Michigan is really flat? We were on long straight roads, many of which had fairly new chip seal and very few of which had any hills. With no real climbing to distract us, we were fortunate that the winds were somewhat favorable today, blowing mostly out of the north. We were either going straight south or due east. The stretches of road that went south were quite fast. The stretches of road that went east, not as much. Winds did build during the day but, as all the riders will say, it wasn’t anything like Sioux Falls, so “meh..” That’s a definite lesson in perspective. Nothing like 30 mph in your face to make other challenges seem less of an issue. That’s one of the many things I really love about these tours. Riders come in with a certain set of experiences that have helped form their perspectives on what constitutes a challenge. Time out here on the road turns many of those on their heads. A relaxed 74 mile recovery day. An easy 15 mph crosswind. It’s just so cool to hear! 😀

All in all it was a very nice day on the bike. Tomorrow is our last day in Michigan. It seems like we just got here. The states are narrower and the days are definitely zipping by more quickly. Don’t forget to look up!
