Day 0 - Astoria OR
It’s Opening Day!!
Prepping and planning complete. It’s time to start the 2019 edition of America by Bicycle’s Across America North. The crew has changed a bit this year. We have 4 returning members with 2 new(ish) addition. Judy Clawson will head up the team as tour leader. Karen Bauer is back as lead SAG coordinator. Rob Leeson has returned as lead mechanic with Robin Crandall as the assistant wrench. As for the “new” staff members, while Cindy Holthouse is new to staffing with AbB, she has ridden just about every tour in the AbB catalog. Cindy will be assisting Judy with on-road logistics. Nick Poikonen is back after a 4 year hiatus working in the real world. He will be assisting Karen with all things SAG and water. It’s an energetic team and we’re all excited to together for the 2019 season.
We offered an early registration yesterday. Almost two-thirds of our riders took advantage of early registration. Most of the remainder showed up first thing on this morning, giving the staff time in the afternoon to make last minute adjustments to vans, trailers and orientation notes. 41 bikes assembled, helmets checked, and riders registered. Riders headed out on their own for the traditional ceremonial wheel dip in the Pacific Ocean at Fort Stevens State Park.
Staff had time for a quick breath and then it was off to orientation with participant introductions, daily routine overview, logistics, safety talk, and route rap. Rap ended with a little celebration including cake and singing for two of our riders who are celebrating their birthdays. The day closed with our first group dinner catered at the hotel. The real work starts tomorrow as we head out of Astoria to Saint Helens. I think we all earned a good night’s sleep!
